Do I need an International Driving Permit to drive a go-kart in Tokyo?
Yes. Indian licence holders need an IDP issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention, together with their original Indian licence and passport. It is issued by your Regional Transport Office and cannot be obtained once you are in Japan.
How long does the RTO take to issue an International Driving Permit?
It varies by state and can take several weeks. Start the application well before your travel dates. This is the most common reason travellers from India are turned away on the day.
What documents does the RTO ask for?
Typically Form 4A, passport-sized photographs, your passport, your visa, proof of address and, in some states, a medical certificate. Requirements differ by RTO, so confirm with yours.
Is the price the total, or are there extra charges?
The price shown is the total per person. Costume, gloves, guide, safety briefing, insurance, snack bar and luggage storage are included. There is no separate kart rental or fuel charge.
Can friends without a licence ride along?
No. The karts are single-seat and every participant drives their own. Anyone joining the tour needs their own valid licence and permit.
Does my IDP need to be a physical booklet?
Yes. Japan accepts only the physical 1949 Geneva Convention booklet. Photocopies, A4 printouts, PDFs and photos on your phone are refused.
What happens if it rains?
Tours generally run in light rain and rain gear is provided. If conditions make it unsafe, staff will contact you. Free cancellation is available up to 24 hours before your scheduled tour.
How long is the tour and what does it cost?
The Shibuya tour runs about 90 minutes and starts at JPY 13,000 per person. The Ginza tour also runs about 90 minutes and starts at JPY 9,500.
What should I wear?
Wear closed shoes and clothes you can move in. Costumes are provided and worn over your own clothes. Skirts and loose scarves are not practical for driving.
How early should I arrive?
Arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled start time. Document checks and the safety briefing happen before departure, and late arrivals may not be able to join.
